The preparations for one of the most important holidays of the year begun already! Since last year, or perhaps earlier, the families of the two candidates Celine and Lili have been designing costumes, training the ancient sports and coordinating everything to be the winners of the 2012 competition. Since the 2nd  of January of this year, the dance groups began rehearsing  divided in the categories of children, youth and "Magers" (mothers) gathering together more than 200 people in some categories!

On the 17th and 19th of March was inaugurated the “Adventure Film Festival 2011” in the Cultural Center of Las Condes. I was able to appreciate between the movies “180° South” documentary in which participates Alicia Ika, mostly known as Lycha. The movie was directed and filmed by Danny Moder, Julia Roberts husband, and he was the one who chose this rapanui woman to lead the project.

The garbage that was accumulated in the City Hall garbage dump “Orito” were taken to the continent on the ship Aquiles of the Chilean Navy. The load included plastic, glass, cardboard, between others. This materials were kept during a year in quarantine before it was permitted to transport it. At the continent they would be taken to two different recycling companies and they would be in charge of processing the trash of Easter Island.


We expect this load to be the first of many! So we can keep Rapa Nui clear of garbage.

LAN Airlines informed on Thursday that Mataveri Airport on Easter Island will be closed from the 5th of March till the 9th of april, because of the paving works on the airport runway. They will cancel, during this period, 6 of the 14 flights they have during the week.

On November our mayor Luz Zasso P. signed an agreement of renewable energies with the Minister of Energy and other authorities. This will save the use of electric energy with the implementation of energetic systems, compose of thermal solar collectors and an energy auxiliary system of high efficiency in the Minors House, Adults Public Center between others. The idea is to have an energetic autonomy.

After some months , on Wednesday the 5th the museum of Rapa Nui reopen his doors, pleasing hundred of tourists that visit it to learn more about the Polynesian culture and the community because of all the activities they do for them.


The same night it was released the CD of Yoyo Tuki “Hoko Manu” were hundreds enjoyed his music.


From Monday de 17thof January a Cycle of Chilean Movies  will start at 21:30hrs. See you!

The Minister of Culture and the artists of the circus were welcome in Easter Island by the community and the local authorities. This visit is part of the “Rapa Nui Plan” organized by the Council of Culture that is trying to strengthen relations and promote the cultural interchange between the community of the island and the rest of Chile.

The 31 of December, New Year’s Eve was celebrated in a exceptional way in Rapa Nui. After a show with local musicians, people who attended enjoyed the spectacular fireworks. “We hope they do it every year!!!”  was everyone’s opinion.

In order to raise the awareness in the population of Easter Island about the delicate ecological situation of the most remote place in the world, the Environmental Management Unit of the City Hall of Easter Island, has created a campaign of Ecobricks. The idea is to fill plastic bottles with clean non-biodegradable trash like aluminum, plastic, etc.

The purpose is to use them to build the Department of Environmental Management and teach the community of Rapa Nui the different techniques to build with this material.
